Does Buzz Equal Sales?

first_photo[1]

With artists like Drake and J. Cole making the huge splash on the industry it made me ask the question “Does buzz translate into sales?” When Cassie did “Me and You” she had the internet buzzing hard. She had a million friends on Myspace. Her CD went brick. Jazmine Sullivan had us thinking she was headed to becoming the next Lauryn. Joe Buddens put out “Pump It Up” and we thought we at least would get a hot CD. In the case of Drake he will be held to higher standard based on his mixtape alone.

50 Cent came with that kind of buzz and lit the industry on fire for three years. Lauryn Hill’s solo CD exploded the same way. But I do have to ask is it worth getting excited before these artist drop their highly anticipated debuts. And when those debuts drop, even if they are hot doesn’t mean they will sell big. This is not the industry of the year 2000 when you put out heat and went gold the first week. Lil Wayne, TI, and Eminem are a rare exception. 50 Cent and G-Unit didn’t even break 100k in record sales on their last CD. Right now 50 is gun shy to put out a new CD. Instead he decided to release a free mixtape/street album.

All I can say is we will wait and see. I hope the best for these new artists. I wish them hot CD’s, hot buzz, that equal hot opening sales.
