Why Hip Hop Has Me Listening to Sam Cooke

I am a 35 year old former emcee from the borough of BK. I feel like today’s Hip Hop is not for the Hip Hop Heads of my generation. For the last few weeks I have been listening to Sam Cooke, Curtis Mayfield and the Impressions, Teddy Pendergrass, etc. Hip Hop has sent me back to the roots. Current Hip Hop is so bad that I have been going to the soul roots that were the catalyst for the genre.

I have been listening to break beats like Nautalius by Bob James (sampled by Main Source’s “Live At The BBQ and many other artists). Hip Hop only has a few good artists that drop around three times in a year. I am fan of Jay Electronica, Jay-Z, J. Cole, Drake and a few other rappers. I am waiting to hear the Method Man, Raekwon, and Ghost CD. I am waiting on Talib and Hi Tek’s reunion, but there is not enough good music to fill the void.

So is it going to get better or worse? After this batch of music will I be officially be boxed out due to this disconnect. I will sorely miss the feeling new hot Hip Hop gave me for the last 30 years if I can’t get with what’s coming next. I just wonder if I will forever be stuck with the music of yesterday. Is today’s music as bad I think, or am I just out of touch?
